The American Community Survey's 2021 estimates are here!

A quick guide to what's new with the 2021 ACS data

Mon 03 April 2023 3 minutes

At last, Censtats is proud to announce the release of our curated, compiled, ready to use data sets based on the American Community Survey's 5-year estimates for 2021! It has been a long time coming, but with this release the ACS's work is now up-to-date and available for purchase on our storefront.

Before purchasing, feel free to read the updates below on what's changed for this year's release as well as the Census' own list of changes.

MEDIAN/MEAN/PER CAPITA

As with every year, the metric for inflation is updated; therefore, for the 2021 Censtats update, you can expect the totals in Median Income, Mean Income, and Per Capita Income to be reflective of 2021 inflation-adjusted dollars.

GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY

Geographic Mobility, like with all previous years, can be a bit touch and go with what data is available for it in each release, and part of this can be due to differential privacy. We want to take a moment to highlight a specific place where you will see this in play.

In the Geographic Mobility data sheet, there are four categories of note: "Different County (%)" and "Moved from different county, same state", both with respective Margin of Error columns. To align by the Census Bureau's standards, the data from which Censtats pulls does not contain comprehensive percentages and integers for these columns. In their place you will instead see the symbol (X).

In addition to this, you will also see minor changes to the language found in the column headers.

HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS

Now that we are firmly in the 2020s, certain columns pertaining to Housing Characteristics have been updated to reflect this progression. Previously, you would see columns titled "Built 2014 or later" and "Built 2010 to 2013." With the release of the 2021 data sets, this has now been updated to "Built 2020 or later" and "Built 2010 to 2019."

Lastly, aside from these changes, you may also find ZIPs/ZCTAs that were not present previously. Some of these were ommitted from Censtats releases for being unique or insignificant data sources, but with this release they are included for a more comprehensive set of census data.

Overall, these are just some very minor changes to what is found within this latest publication. We thank you again for your support, and are more than happy to help with any questions you may have about our data releases!
