The 2021 Data Sets Are On Their Way!

An update on when to expect Censtats' release of the ACS 2021 5-year estimates

Mon 12 December 2022 2 minutes

The good news is here: on December 8th, the American Community Survey released the five year estimates, covering 2017 to 2021. More good news is here as well: Censtats is already in the process of curating it for you!

While the process should not take too long, we wanted to take this moment to briefly highlight some of the changes to expect in this edition of the ACS. Some of them might surprise you...

First off, in our "Selected Housing Characteristics" file you'll notice that the years a house was built in are different now. In previous years, they were represented in decennial increments such as "1990 to 1999" except for "2010 to 2013" and then "2014 or later." This time around, as time moves forward, the ACS has changed this categorization to now encompass the decade in its entirety, so you'll be seeing "2010 to 2019" and "2020 or later" instead.

...And that's it! Surprisingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly), the number of changes found in this iteration are fairly limited, and some additional ones found over on the Census' website cover areas not edited by Censtats. Once the 2021 set is ready, we'll review any further notable changes made to our formatting and share it here on the blog. See you at launch!
